While the US and Israel have strongly opposed the move, and the UK has said it will abstain from the vote unless Mr. Abbas promises not to use his new status to bring war crime allegations against Israel in front of the International Criminal Court, there appear to be more than enough votes in the UN General Assembly for the motion which, in its current draft, expresses little more than support for the fundamental aspects of efforts towards a two state solution that have existed for decades now.
The draft resolution to be voted on at the UN says, among other things:
"Reaffirms the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and to independence in their State of Palestine on the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967;
Decides to accord to Palestine non-member observer State status in the United Nations, without prejudice to the acquired rights, privileges and role of the Palestine Liberation Organization in the United Nations as the representative of the Palestinian people, in accordance with the relevant resolutions and practice;
Expresses the hope that the Security Council will consider favourably the application submitted on 23 September 2011 by the State of Palestine for admission to full membership in the United Nations;
(and) Affirms its determination to contribute to the achievement of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people and the attainment of a peaceful settlement in the Middle East that ends the occupation that began in 1967 and fulfills the vision of two States: an independent, sovereign, democratic, contiguous and viable State of Palestine living side by side in peace and security with Israel on the basis of the pre-1967 borders.
The US State Department has said the upgrade will be counterproductive, and some Israeli politicians have mooted cutting off the disbursement of tax receipts to the Palestinian Authority and even seeking to topple the PA in retaliation. The Israeli government has downplayed the issue in the past few days, with spokesman Mark Regev telling the New York Times that passage of "a one-sided anti-Israel resolution" by the General Assembly "should come as a surprise to nobody" and "ultimately, what we will see at the United Nations is diplomatic theater. It will in no way affect the realities on the ground.?
In the short term, at least, Mr. Regev is almost certainly correct. The moribund peace process is likely to remain so. Still, not everyone in Israel is in agreement. Bernard Avishai was in touch with former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert today, and in a piece for The Daily Beast's Open Zion channel, writes that Mr. Olmert thinks the move could eventually kick-start a healthier dialogue:
?I believe,? Olmert wrote me, intending his statement to be made public, ?that the Palestinian request from the United Nations is congruent with the basic concept of the two-state solution. Therefore, I see no reason to oppose it. Once the United Nations will lay the foundation for this idea, we in Israel will have to engage in a serious process of negotiations, in order to agree on specific borders based on the 1967 lines, and resolve the other issues. It is time to give a hand to, and encourage, the moderate forces amongst the Palestinians. Abu-Mazen"?an alias for Abbas?"and Salam Fayyad need our help. It's time to give it.?
Is Olmert just chasing the past? Isn?t the antagonism between Hamas and Israel?s ?consensus? now the only relevant reality? Nonsense. What makes Abbas irrelevant is not Hamas ?steadfastness,? but his failure to garner sufficient American backing for the principles he and Olmert worked through over 36 meetings in 2008: principles for resolving Jerusalem, borders, security and refugees consistent with the positions taken by previous American administrations, but which Netanyahu refuses to accept as a basis for new negotiations.
I wrote yesterday about Abbas's seeming irrelevance, and hopes that the UN bid could bring some political momentum back his way, which lately has seemed to all be in Hamas' direction.
But all this also brought back to mind the attacks against Obama in May 2011 for advocating the same thing (following in the footsteps of President George H.W. Bush, whose advocacy for a two-state solution on the basis of the pre-1967 armistice lines was dismissed by Benjamin Netanyahu in 1992 as the "borders of Auschwitz.") What did Obama say then?
"The borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed land swaps." What does that mean? Well, in practice it means the Israelis and the Palestinians would negotiate bits of a future Palestinian state that would not follow the 1967 borders, with some Israeli settlement blocs presumably being swapped for other bits of Israeli land. 1967 is just a starting point.
That's been the general working idea for the last four US presidencies, including two Republican administrations. Yet not only was (Mitt) Romney striking out at Obama as having undermined Israel's "ability to negotiate peace" but others were reacting with outrage. Mike Huckabee complained of Obama's "betrayal" of Israel.
Huckabee also fell into a camp that apparently misunderstood what Obama said. He complained that Obama "made a grievous mistake by suggesting borders of Israel go back to pre-1967 borders." As did Tim Pawlenty, a fellow Republican presidential aspirant ("Obama's insistence on a return to the 1967 borders is a ... very dangerous demand.") As explained earlier, that's not what Obama said.
Well now the UN is cementing its long-standing position. Some Israelis like Mr. Olmert see the move as in their country's best interests. President Obama still holds his position, though he's standing in the way of the UN move as a favor to Mr. Netanyahu and Israel.Today, US officials lobbied Mr. Abbas to back off. No luck.
Something is about to happen. Will it change much? Who knows. But Palestine's status at the UN thus far doesn't seem to have been helping the so-called peace process.

Tsipouro
Tsipouro is a Greek traditional distillation product from the pomace of grapes (the residue of the?wine press) particularly brewed in ?Thessaly?(Tsipouro Tyrnavou,) Epirus,?Macedonia,?Mani Peninsula and the island of?Crete, where Cretans call it?tsikoudia.?Tsipouro?is a strong?distilled spirit?containing approximately 45 percent alcohol. Other areas of Greece use the name?raki.
According to tradition, the first production of?tsipouro?was the work of Greek Orthodox?monks. This occurred during the 14th Century on?Mount Athos?in Macedonia. The idea of using the pomace left over from the wine-making process produce a distilled spirit was passed to?viticulturists?in poorer regions across the country.
Depending on the time of year,?tsipouro?is used either as refreshment or as a hot beverage, and depending on the time of day, it replaces for many the drinking of coffee or wine.?It is usually served in shot glasses, with ice, often with delicious meze including feta, ham, olives, tomatoes, halva?or other desserts in restaurants.
?Ouzo
This anise-flavored?aperitif?is a symbol of Greek culture and has many scores of thousands of enthusiasts in Greece and Cyprus. Deriving from the anise flavored version of tsipouro, modern ouzo distillation largely took off in the beginning of the 19th Century following the?Greek independence fight, with production blooming mainly on the island of?Lesbos, which claims to be the originator of the drink and remains a major producer. In the early 20th Century when absinthe was gradually abandoned, ouzo rose as the new substitute.
In 1932, ouzo producers developed a method of distillation using?copper?stills?that is now the standard method of production. One of the largest producers of ouzo today is?Varvayiannis, located in the town of?Plomari?in the southeast portion of Lesbos, while in the same town?Pitsiladi, a variety of high quality ouzo is also distilled.
Ouzo is traditionally mixed with water,?becoming cloudy white, and served with ice cubes in a small glass. Ouzo can also be drunk straight from a?shot glass. Served with a small plate of a variety of appetizers called?mezes, usually small fresh fish, fries, olives and?feta cheese, ouzo has a smooth yet distinctly sweetened taste that can bring light-headedness in only a few shots.

Ouzito, as you may have imagined is a coctail with ouzo. The Greek answer to mojito ? as many call it- is a mix of mint, lemon, soda water, sugar and ouzo. Popular legend has it that?the evolution of retsina stems from the Roman conquest of Greece. Stories claim that the Romans?plundered?the wines of Greece, angering the citizens who turned to pine resin as a way of extending their store of wine and as a deterrent to their thirsty conquerors. The harsh flavor was said to put off the Romans, who refused to drink the bitter ferment.
In Greece, local retsina is produced throughout the country with widely popular brands being Malamatina, Tsantali, Kourtaki and Georgiadis. Major production centers around?Attica,?Boeotia?and?Euboea. The brand has had a strong comeback since 2000 with producers making special references to its historic legacy and original taste, thus boosting sales.
Heineken (the Green) and Amstel (the Red) are two brands of beer that have taken gradually most of the Greek beer market, although they are more expensive and try to squeeze out Greek beers from competing with them. CINCINNATI - Thousands of local families will have a slightly more festive Thanksgiving thanks to a two-day food drive held by a local church community.
On Saturday and Sunday, members of the Crossroads church were expected to drop off around 9,000 boxes of food to locations in Oakley, Mason and Florence. The collected food will later be redistributed to needy families in the Greater Cincinnati area.
As a result of the drive, about 4,500 boxes of food will be distributed to 70 inner-city churches and charities in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. The churches and charities will then share the collected goods with families in their communities who are in need of help this holiday season.
The Crossroads congregations will donate an additional 4,300 boxes of food to two charities in South Africa.
Officials with the Crossroads church say the food drive provides about 300,000 meals for Thanksgiving.
The holiday food drive has inspired similar initiatives in Louisiana and Georgia, according to officials from the Crossroads church.

SAN FRANCISCO: Smartphones and tablets powered by Google's Android software are devouring the mobile gadget market, eating into Apple's turf by feeding appetites for innovation and low prices, analysts say.
The Android operating system powered nearly three out of four smartphones shipped worldwide in the recently ended quarter as the mobile platform dominated the market, according to industry trackers at IDC.
"Android has been one of the primary growth engines of the smartphone market since it was launched in 2008," said IDC's mobile phones research manager Ramon Llamas.
"In every year since then, Android has effectively outpaced the market and taken market share from the competition."
In tablets, Apple's market share has fallen to just over 50 percent from 65 percent in the second quarter as Android devices gain ground, according to IDC figures.
"Having a lot of people building a lot of things covering a lot of price points with multiple brands in multiple places makes a big difference," said NPD Group analyst Stephen Baker.
"Variety is strength when it comes to moving units."
Android smartphones shipments surged to 136 million, topping those in the same three-month period last year by slightly more than 90 percent, IDC reported.
Samsung's Galaxy S3 overtook Apple's iPhone 4S in the third quarter to give the South Korean firm the world's best-selling smartphone model for the first time ever, according to research firm Strategy Analytics.
"The pace of innovation in Android is faster than Apple," said Gartner vice president of mobile computing Ken Dulaney. "They are just trying harder; Apple is way behind in that area."
Android is benefiting from being an "open-source" platform that gadget makers use free of charge and improve as they deem fit, providing Google with insights along the way.
Apple tightly controls its products from the software to the hardware and even the online shop for music, books, games or other content.
"What you get with Android is this incredible feedback loop with developers, equipment makers, customers, and designers," Dulaney said.
"At Apple, as long as they have a great vision internally it is fine but they don't have the feedback Android does."
Having thousands of different Android devices vying for consumers' cash is a strength when it comes to market share but puts hardware makers into a fiercely competitive arena, Baker noted.
"Other than Samsung, I don't know if other Android guys are making money," the analyst said.
Google gives Android away free, but the platform is crafted to make it easy for people to use the California Internet titan's money-making services such as search and maps, and get content at its online Google Play shop.
Forrester analyst Charles Golvin said that forces powering Android momentum include changing demographics of smartphone buyers.
Early adopters of smartphones focused more on new technology than on price, but the devices have gone mainstream with cost increasingly important to shoppers, according to Golvin.
"People are more inclined toward the Android platform because there is more choice and most of that choice is low price," Golvin said.
The open nature of Android and the myriad models offered by gadget makers serve as a "double-edged sword," warned the analyst.
Apple pushes annual updates of iOS mobile operating system out to its devices, while new versions of Android hit more often but must get through hardware makers and telecom services to get onto people's handsets.
"You have this lengthy chain of intermediaries who are delaying the delivery of that new software and its innovations to existing devices in the market," Golvin said.

First, he hit B-back Zach Laskey, who came out of the backfield and got behind the secondary, with a lofted pass with just the right amount of touch for a 28-yard score that gave the Jackets a 28-17 lead. The preceding play illustrated why Washington drives some fans crazy. Rolling right on an option play, Washington put a Duke defender to the ground by faking a pitch to a trailing A-back. Washington kept going and then pitched the ball forward, resulting in an illegal forward pass because he had already crossed the line of scrimmage. He rebounded with the touchdown pass.
He followed that with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Robbie Godhigh on a crossing route and capped it with a second touchdown pass to Godhigh.

The study, led by Dr Heike Schroeder from the University of East Anglia (UEA) and the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, argues that the consensus-based decision making used by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) stifles progress and contributes to negotiating deadlocks, which ultimately hurts poor countries more than rich countries.
It shows that delegations from some countries taking part have increased in size over the years, while others have decreased, limiting poor countries' negotiating power and making their participation less effective.
Writing in the journal Nature Climate Change, Dr Schroeder, Dr Maxwell Boykoff of the University of Colorado and Laura Spiers of Pricewaterhouse Coopers, argue that changes are long overdue if demands for climate mitigation and adaptation agreements are to be met.
They recommend that countries consider capping delegation numbers at a level that allows broad representation across government departments and sectors of society, while maintaining a manageable overall size.
Dr Schroeder, of UEA's School of International Development, will be attending COP18. She said: "The UN must recognize that these antiquated structures serve to constrain rather than compel co-operation on international climate policy. The time is long overdue for changes to institutions and structures that do not support decision-making and agreements.
"Poor countries cannot afford to send large delegations and their level of expertise usually remains significantly below that of wealthier countries. This limits poor countries' negotiating power and makes their participation in each session less effective."
The researchers found that attendance has changed in terms of the number and diversity of representatives. The number of delegates went from 757 representing 170 countries at the first COP in 1995 to 10,591 individuals from 194 countries attending COP15 in 2009 a 1400 per cent increase. At COP15 there were also 13,500 delegates from 937 non-government Observer organisations.
Small developing countries have down-sized their delegations while G-7 and +5 countries (Brazil, China, India, Mexico, and South Africa) have increased theirs. The exception is the United States, which after withdrawing from the Kyoto Protocol started to send fewer delegates to COPs.
The study, Equity and state representations in climate negotiations, also looked at the make-up of the delegations and found an increase in participation by environmental, campaigning, academic and other non-Governmental organisations.
"Our work shows an increasing trend in the size of delegations on one side and a change in the intensity, profile and politicization of the negotiations on the other," explained Dr Schroeder. "These variations suggest the climate change issue and its associated interests are framed quite differently across countries. NSAs are well represented on national delegations but clearly the government decides who is included and who is not, and what the official negotiating position of the country and its level of negotiating flexibility are."
Some countries send large representations from business associations (Brazil), local government (Canada) orscience and academia (Russia). For small developing countries such as Bhutan and Gabon the majority of government representatives come from environment, forestry and agriculture. While that amounted to a success for Google, it was followed by sobering news for those would-be buyers who were later informed that their orders could face three-week delays.
Still, with the Christmas season just around the corner, the Nexus line-up is likely to continue selling steadily. That just piles the pressure on Google to get its supply chain in order by then.
AMD continues to slump
While smartphones and tablets seemed to dominate much of the news cycle this week, we also saw some commotion over at chip manufacturer AMD. The Sunnyvale, California-based firm, which has seen its semiconductor business slow in the face of the decline of PC sales and the corresponding rise in mobile computing, was the butt of acquisition rumours fuelled by the news that it had hired a bank to explore its financial options.
But in spite of its massive losses and the consequent dropping of 15 per cent of its global workforce, AMD is not looking to be sold or even to sell off major assets, insisted chief executive Rory Read in a memo to staff.
However, not everyone is convinced by Read?s insistence that the company is on the right track. Joel Hruska warns that ?AMD?s ability to survive through 2013 and into 2014, when new parts (and its ARM-based server chips) arrive is very much in question. It?s simply not clear how much more the company can cut its payroll or other expenses before it directly jeopardises its long-term ability to deliver a roadmap that investors trust to be competitive with other?companies.? Looks like more tough times ahead.
The latest estimates put the number of dead in the Syria conflict at more than 36,000, with a million people internally displaced. Hundreds of thousands of Syrians have fled to neighboring countries. A second day of government shelling of the Syrian border town Ras al-Ayn continues to drive refugees into Turkey.
The killing continues in large part because Russia, China, and the United States are deadlocked in the United Nations over intervention, the Syrian government is determined to destroy the rebels, and the rebels are equally committed to the destruction of the Bashar al-Assad regime. Britain and France have each expressed increasing support for the opposition, confirming a shift in their approach to the conflict. The Gulf Cooperation Council has announced formal recognition of the Syrian National Council, and Britain plans to meet with the opposition group later this week.
As policymakers in Europe, the US, the Gulf, Turkey, and the Arab League search for ways to resolve the conflict, they should consider what the wars in Bosnia and Kosovo have to teach about what can and cannot be achieved by outside intervention.

The past in the Balkans is hauntingly similar to the current situation in Syria. As in Bosnia and Kosovo, Syria?s ethnic groups lived together harmoniously for decades. In both cases, unexpected developments ? the collapse of the Soviet Union and the dismantling of Yugoslavia in the Balkans, and the momentum of the Arab Spring uprisings in Syria ? triggered dissent. And in each region, repression and reprisal destroyed the opportunity for peaceful change.
Efforts to end the war in Bosnia took so long and were so hamstrung by divergent internal and external interests that the fighting continued for years and caused the deaths of 100,000 people, often in flagrant disregard of international efforts to halt the violence. The siege of Sarajevo and the massacre at Srebrenica are two among many war crimes. Eventually, after extensive NATO airstrikes, UN artillery barrages, and the arming of the Croatian and Bosnian forces, an international peacekeeping force was able to separate the combatants.
Peace of a sort came after a final conference at Dayton, Ohio in 1995. However, the bitterness sown by years of murderous assaults has prevented reconciliation. At least outside intervention stopped the killing. One of the most important factors in the calculus of Serbs, Bosniaks, and Croatians was their desire to join the European Union. The incentive of EU membership worked both to foster democracy and to bring to justice those most responsible for the murder of the innocent and unarmed.
Kosovo was in many ways a replay of the war in Bosnia, with tardy outside intervention after thousands had been killed and hundreds of thousands of refugees had fled for their lives. After a ceasefire in 1998 failed to hold, the Serbian government rejected the terms of the Rambouillet Accords, which called for restoration of Kosovo?s autonomy and the deployment of a NATO force of peacekeepers. In response to the Serbian refusal, NATO bombed Serbia for three months, and in June of that year, Serbian forces withdrew from Kosovo. After the fighting ended, a NATO force entered the country.
Kosovo declared its independence 10 years later, and has been recognized by nearly 100 countries. As with the earlier conflict in Bosnia, the hatred stoked by the killing and by conflicting ethnic and religious differences continue to prevent reconciliation between Serbs and Kosovars. Again, however, the allure of membership in the EU weighed on the minds of Kosovars and Serbs and helped convince leaders on both sides to stop the killing.
The lessons of the two murderous episodes in the Balkans hold clear import for Syria. Those lessons are:
? The killing won?t stop without outside intervention. In fact, the cruelty accelerates as barbarism spreads and moral and legal restraints are undermined.
? Agreement among key outside powers is crucial. Acquiescence from some of them is good enough.
? Because of a reliance on air power, outside intervention never became a quagmire in the Balkans even though Serbian forces were heavily armed with modern weapons.
? Reconciliation is the work of decades or more, but its imperfections are not an argument to wait.
? Stopping the killing is aided by powerful financial and social incentives (like EU membership) independent of the differences between the warring parties.
Intervention of course, is not an easy solution, nor is it one that is welcome in Washington, Brussels, Ankara, Moscow, or Beijing. The most encouraging thing one can say is that President Obama?s re-election frees him from domestic political pressures to a degree unknown in his first term. Taking advantage of this freedom, the US, the EU, and Turkey must build a broad coalition, including Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Egypt, and Jordan, and then act together ? immediately and decisively, with or without UN Security Council authorization.
The decision to intervene recognizes that there is no other way to save tens of thousands of lives. Acquiescence is sufficient, particularly from Russia and China, but also from some Arab states. This could take the form of public criticism and private acceptance of military action without specific UN authorization, which was the Russian position during the war in Kosovo. It could mean abstention in the Security Council, which was the Chinese position regarding the first Iraq war.
Helping to stop the killing, and in the process winning a role in shaping post-war Syria, are powerful incentives for Egypt and Iraq to join rather than oppose the intervention. If they nonetheless decline to directly support it, their tacit acceptance would be an important contribution to the success of the operation.
An international force on the ground in Syria to keep order and prevent reprisals is essential. An end to the killing in Syria should be among the issues discussed at the meetings between the US and Iran scheduled for early next year. If Iran is willing to work with the US and its coalition partners to stop the killing in Syria, it should be invited to the final peace conference and assured that its interests will be carefully considered.

Finally, wealthy nations in the Middle East and elsewhere must establish a fund of billions of dollars dedicated to Syrian reconstruction and reconciliation. The fund should be constituted immediately and distribution made contingent on a halt to the fighting and a commitment from all Syrians to avoid reprisals and work together for justice and reconciliation.

That?s what was going through Caden Call?s mind as Bingham lined up against the Syracuse defense for 2 yards that would give them another chance to win in Thursday?s 4A semifinal.
"It?s that whole thing: Defense wins championships," said Call, a junior defensive tackle. "It?s why we play, for moments like that. You need a big stop, and everyone gets to see what it?s all about."
In that tense moment, the Titans made the tackle, got the stop and the 21-16 win to head to the program?s first-ever championship game. But facing wire-to-wire No. 1-ranked Jordan, it?s clear that they will once again be an underdog.
Something intriguing is happening up in Syracuse: The 12-0 Titans are perhaps one of the most dismissed undefeated teams in recent memory. Yet they?ve allowed the fewest points in Class 5A, and they just beat the second-ranked defense without arguably their most valuable player.
It?s hard to argue Syracuse is having a fluke season considering it was in the semifinals last year, and it?s gone through two of the top bluebloods in the state to get to the championship.
"I think it?s good we?ve flown under the radar," says Jace Purser, a 200-pound defensive end who has terrorized offensive lines for 9.5 sacks this season. "Teams think they don?t have to prepare for us, then they get surprised when we play well."
It might have something to do with the unlikely nature of the Titans? rise. They graduated most of their offensive and defensive linemen last year, give up some size to many of the teams they face, and have suffered crippling injuries in the playoffs.
Quarterback Brock Anderson, a dynamic dual-threat leader for Syracuse, will be on the sideline on Friday after getting surgery for a torn ACL. Three defensive backs also missed the Bingham game with injury.

But the Titans sack quarterbacks and intercept passes as efficiently as anyone in the state, and they do it without big-name Division I commitments. It?s telling that the team is having such success a year after the graduation of Hunter Dimick, one of the school?s biggest recruits in its six-year history.
"I think everyone would like those big offers," senior cornerback Diante Mitchell says. "But we don?t single anyone out. Everybody buys into the system."
Syracuse fights through more athletic teams by having thorough technique. It means a lot of time pushing sleds, a lot of time working through techniques the Titans use to beat linemen with 60 to 80 pounds of weight advantage.
"We know what we can do and we know what we can?t do," Purser says. "We?re always trying to think of other options."
But Jordan is ranked No. 1 for a reason, much in part to the Beetdiggers? ability to run the ball with quarterback Austin Kafentzis and Clay Moss. A senior-laden line ? one that the Titans describe as the toughest they?ll see ? has powered a Jordan offense that hasn?t scored fewer than 33 points this year.
Syracuse is allowing 9.1 points per game this year. So something has to give.
If the Titans do somehow beat the odds, do somehow come up with a fourth-and-short situation that could give them their first title, they believe they won?t be the ones who give in.
"In those big moments, you want to make the big play," Call says. "We love it when people underestimate us. It?s up to us to go and prove them wrong."
