JP Morgan to pay $410 Million for manipulating California energy market

JP Morgan to pay $410 Million for manipulating California energy market

WASHINGTON, D.C.
July 30, 2013 11:43am

?? Engaged in manipulative bidding strategies

?? Wringing money out of old power plants

JP Morgan Ventures Energy Corporation, a unit of the giant New York banking company JP Morgan Chase & Co., has agreed to pay a fine and refund ?unjust? profits totaling $410 million, the federal government says.

That, says the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, will settle its complaint that the Morgan unit manipulated the California and Michigan electric markets from September 2010 through November 2012.

FERC investigators determined that JP Morgan Ventures Energy Corporation engaged in 12 manipulative bidding strategies designed to make profits from older power plants that were usually out of the money in the marketplace because they were inefficient.

FERC investigators further determined that JPMVEC knew that the California Independent System Operator and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator received no benefit from making inflated payments to the company, thereby defrauding the ISOs by obtaining payments for benefits that the company did not deliver beyond the routine provision of energy.

FERC investigators also determined that JPMVEC?s bids displaced other generation and altered day ahead and real-time prices from the prices that would have resulted had the company not submitted the bids.

Under the agreement, JPMVEC will pay a civil penalty of $285 million to the U.S. Treasury and disgorge $125 million in unjust profits. The first $124 million of the disgorged profits will go to ratepayers in the California Independent System Operator, which operates the California electricity market. The other $1 million will go to ratepayers in the Midcontinent Independent System Operator.

JP Morgan Ventures Energy Corporation admits the facts set forth in the agreement, but neither admits nor denies the violations, says FERC. The company did, however, agree to waive claims for additional payments from the California ISO relating to two of the strategies under investigation.

JP Morgan Ventures Energy Corporation also will conduct a comprehensive assessment by outside counsel of its policies and practices in the power business.

The case stems from multiple referrals to FERC from the California ISO and MISO market monitors in 2011 and 2012 regarding JP Morgan Ventures Energy Corporation?s bidding practices. These practices were the subject of four emergency tariff filings by the California ISO and MISO, each of which was approved by the Commission.

Schrödinger's 'kittens' made in the lab from photons

Erwin Schr?dinger dreamed up the famous thought experiment about a cat that is both dead and alive to demonstrate the absurdity of applying quantum mechanics to ordinary objects. Now two teams have made the closest thing yet to a Schr?dinger's cat in the lab ? by connecting hundreds of millions of photons via the strange quantum property of entanglement.

"It's not the entanglement of something as big as a cat, but it's at least a kitten," says Seth Lloyd of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a quantum physicist who was not involved in the work.

The results, which were presented on 23 July at the Second International Conference on Quantum Technologies, in Moscow, Russia, suggest that the rules of quantum mechanics may extend to much larger objects than we thought ? and that this could have practical uses.

We know that quantum properties such as entanglement ? the linking of the states of two objects ? and superposition ? the ability of something to be in two states at once ? describe the behaviour of very small objects, but our experience tells us that these properties don't apply to large ones. Schr?dinger's thought experiment emphasises this discrepancy.

If a cat is in a box with a radioactive atom that can decay to trigger the release of a poison from a flask, then the state of the cat and the state of the atom are entangled: if the radioactive atom decays, the cat dies. But according to quantum mechanics, the atom, a quantum object, can be in a superposition of decayed and not decayed at the same time. And that means that the cat is also both alive and dead ? though in the real world, this seems absurd.

No superposed cats

An apparent lack of cats ? and other large objects ? in such a superposition has led physicists to wonder where exactly the quantum realm ends, and why. "Is there a border between micro and macro, or does quantum mechanics apply on all scales?" asks Alexander Lvovsky, who works at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada, and the Russian Quantum Center in Moscow, which organised the conference.

Previous experiments aimed to answer this question this by getting ever bigger objects to display quantum properties. For example, two 3-millimetre diamonds have been entangled, and a drum the size of a grain of sand has been caught obeying the uncertainty principle, which says you cannot simultaneously determine a quantum particle's exact position and momentum.

Lvovsky and colleagues wanted to mimic the Schr?dinger's cat scenario more faithfully. They used a semi-transparent mirror to put a single photon into a mixture of two quantum states ? one corresponding to the photon passing through the mirror, and the other corresponding to reflection. They then entangled the two states.

Next, the team used lasers to amplify one of the states, so that it was spread over hundreds of millions of photons. This beam was big enough to see in principle, though the frequency of the light was not in the visible range.

They then restored the light to its original one-photon state. Measurements confirmed that the entanglement had remained throughout the experiment ? even though one state had been applied to a macroscopic system for a time.

Macro-micro link

The researchers say this represents the first entanglement between a microscopic and macroscopic object. Just as the atom in Schr?dinger's thought experiment is linked with the cat, in Lvovsky's experiment, the state of a single photon is linked to the hundred-million-strong array.

"Our breakthrough has been that, so far, people have been able to build these superposition states containing only a few photons, and we've been able to do it with 160 million photons," says Lvovsky.

Meanwhile, Nicolas Gisin and his colleagues from the University of Geneva in Switzerland got similar results, but with a slightly different experimental set-up.

Lloyd suggests that macro-micro entanglement could be used to dramatically increase the accuracy of interferometers ? devices that use entanglement to measure very small differences in length.

Both teams say that they are still far away from reproducing the experiment with a real cat. As Lvovsky points out, that would be "inhumane" anyway.

General Motors said today it plans to double the amount of models that achieve 40 mpg highway or better by 2017.

The goal was outlined in a June letter by CEO Dan Akerson that was included in the company's 2012 Sustainability Report. The Chevrolet Volt, Sonic, Cruze Eco Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel already meet that requirement, and the 2014 Cadillac ELR and Spark EV will surpass it when released.

"Sustainability is not only a key part of how GM is shifting from a good to great company, it is about the leadership and innovation that can transform the auto industry," Akerson said in a statement. "Our long-term approach to sustainability enables us to increase efficiency and re-imagine personal mobility to best meet customer needs and lifestyles."

Akerson wrote in the letter that GM is making its vehicles more environmentally friendly by reducing vehicle mass and improving the thermodynamic efficiency of its gasoline engines, among other things. He said the national CAFE program ? which will require new cars to achieve an average fuel economy of 54.5 mpg by 2025 ? sets "realistic targets" for automakers.

Though the concept of electrification is slowly becoming reality throughout the industry, Akerson wrote in the letter that GM is dedicating more resources to use electricity to help improve performance and fuel economy. GM aims to have 500,000 vehicles on U.S. roads "with some form of electrification" by 2017.

By 2016, GM also plans to reduce average fleet CO2 emissions by 15 percent in the U.S. For Opel and Vauxhall in Europe, the automaker hopes to reduce fleet emissions by 27 percent by 2020.

Pak obsession with India led to Osama raid: Probe report

US Navy SEALs were able to sneak into Pakistan covertly to kill Osama bin Laden because of advanced American stealth technology and the Pakistani military's obsession with India.

The leaked report of the Abbottabad commission said India remained the focus of Pakistan's military "despite a growing American threat including actual border raids, drone strikes, special operations, the spread of a hostile spy network" among others.

"Given the negative developments in the US-Pakistan relations in recent years, there was no basis to limit defence planning to only one front in the east (with India), while ignoring the border and airspace in the West," it said.

It noted that apart from tensions with the US, there were also differences with Afghanistan and a developing strategic relationship between Afghanistan and India on one hand and between India and the US on the other.

"All this should have been taken into consideration instead of leaving the western borders exposed to the increasingly 'kinetic' and threatening policies of the US which were directed against Pakistan," the report said.

It said that there seemed to be a "defeatist element" in the defence planning of the Pakistan Air Force, especially in the acceptance of the fact that it was "not structured and equipped to fight a two-front war".

It also noted that defence policy provided the framework and guidance for the formulation of the Joint Strategic Directive which was the "Bible for the armed forces".

"The last JSD was issued in 2007 and specifically stated India has been and will continue to be the main military threat to Pakistan," the report noted.

The Pakistani Deputy Chief of Air Staff said none of the government departments, civil or military, had ever declared the US or Afghanistan to be a direct threat to Pakistan.

'Big Brother' host Julie Chen says she's 'stung' by racist and homophobic comments

By Tin Kenneally

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - A day after "Big Brother" aired controversial statements with racist and homophobic overtones made by the show's contestants, the show's host, Julie Chen, declared herself "stung" by the comments, saying, "I took it personally."

She added that she was most struck by the anti-Asian comments, directed toward a contestant named Helen.

Chen used her other CBS show, "The Talk," as a platform to discuss the comments made by contestant Aaryn Gries.

"When I first found out that Aaryn, who's a 22-year-old girl, made anti-gay, anti-black and anti-Asian comments, I have to be honest - the Asian ones hit me the most," Chen told her "Talk" cohorts. "I heard her describe Asians as squinty-eyed, and 'Go make a bowl of rice.' She said that about Helen, who is Chinese ... It stung. I took it personally.

Cheng went on to say that Gries' comments - initially captured on the "Big Brother" live feed but addressed on Sunday night's broadcast - reminded her of her own experiences with racism as a child.

"The really sad part was it took me back to the '70s when I was growing up in Queens, and when I was 7 years old getting bullied, being called a chink and people pulling their eyes," Chen revealed. "And then I felt ignorant. I felt like, wow, there's still people who live in this country who feel that way and act that way? Yes, there is. And afterwards it just made me sad, because she's 22 - she's college-educated."

Chen's "Talk" colleague Sara Gilbert noted that she's "happy" the comments made it onto the broadcast.

"I'm happy that CBS and 'Big Brother' aired the comments because I feel like it's good for people to see it, and let those people deal with the consequences when they get out of the house," Gilbert said.

While Gries' fate on "Big Brother" remains to be seen, as does her post-reality TV career, she's already suffered some blowback from her ill-chosen words. Gries' talent agency fired her after the comments made headlines last week.

A second contestant on the current season of "Big Brother," GinaMarie Zimmerman, was also let go from her job at the East Coast USA Pageant, after she was accused of hurling the N word.

Rosemont, IL (July 8, 2013) There have been dramatic decreases in the number and severity of lower limb amputations over the past decade, according to a new study published in the July 2013 issue of Foot & Ankle International. At the same time, orthopaedic advances in treating diabetic foot ulcers have become more commonplace, hopefully decreasing the need for amputation.

The statistics on diabetes prevalence and impact are sobering. Nearly 26 million U.S. children and adults, or 8 percent of the population, have diabetes, says the American Diabetes Association. The number of people living with diabetes is expected to reach 44 million individuals by 2034. The economic cost of diagnosed diabetes in the United States is $245 billion per year. Finally, diabetes is responsible for more than 60 percent of lower limb amputations from non-trauma causes.

Researchers at the University of Iowa Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation studied lower extremity amputation rates and diabetic foot ulcer treatments under Medicare claims over a 10-year period from 2000-2010. The rate of lower extremity amputations declined 28.8 percent over the decade, but the number of claims for orthopaedic treatments for diabetic foot ulcers rose 143.3 percent during the same time period. Phinit Phisitkul, MD, is senior author of the study "Declines in Lower Extremmity Amputation in the US Medicare Population, 2000-2010" published in the July 2013 issue of Foot & Ankle International, the journal of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society.

"The shift in amputation level observed in the Medicare population is also quite striking," said Dr. Phisitkul. "Amputations at the upper and lower leg level are down 47 percent, while amputations at the partial toe level increased by 24 percent. What this means for patients is increased mobility, independence and survival rates."

At the same time that amputations were becoming less frequent, the frequency of orthopaedic treatmentsfor diabetic foot ulcers rose significantly. The advances in orthopedic surgery include total contact casting, Achilles tendon release and calf muscle lengthening. These treatments help diabetic foot ulcers heal and help prevent their recurrence by relieving pressure where the ulcers tend to form.

"Further studies are required to determine the causes of the decrease in lower extremity amputation, which could be a combination of better preventive care, insulin control and the orthopaedic treatments. More work is also required to determine the best practices in preventing lower limb amputation," added Phisitkul.

It creates public awareness for the prevention and treatment of foot and ankle disorders, provides leadership, and serves as a resource for government, industry and the national and international health care community.

About Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeons

Orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeons are medical doctors (MD and DO) who specialize in the diagnosis, care, and treatment of patients with disorders of the musculoskeletal system of the foot and ankle. This includes the bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, tendons, nerves and skin. Orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeons use medical, physical, and rehabilitative methods as well as surgery to treat patients of all ages. They perform reconstructive procedures, treat sports injuries, and manage and treat trauma of the foot and ankle. Orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeons work with physicians of many other specialties, including internal medicine, pediatrics, vascular surgery, endocrinology, radiology, anesthesiology, and others. Medical school curriculum and post-graduate training proves the solid clinical background necessary to recognize medical problems, admit patients to a hospital when necessary, and contribute significantly to the coordination of care appropriate to each patient.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Sandia National Laboratories and Texas Tech University commissioned the DOE/Sandia Scaled Wind Farm Technology (SWiFT) facility today at the Reese Technology Center in Lubbock, Texas. The SWiFT is the first public facility of its kind to use multiple wind turbines to measure how wind turbines interact with one another in a wind farm.

The event featured speakers from the DOEs Wind Program, Vestas Wind Systems, Sandia and Texas Tech.

The Energy Departments wind testing facilities, including the Scaled Wind Farm Technology site in Texas, support the continued growth of our nations clean energy economy while helping to speed the deployment of next generation energy technologies and bring more clean, affordable renewable power to American homes and businesses, said Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy David Danielson.

Jon White of Sandias Wind Energy Technologies Department, technical lead for the project, said SWiFT is the first moderate-scale facility allowing up to 10 wind turbines specifically designed to investigate, test and develop technology for wind plants.

Some estimates show that 10 to 40 percent of wind energy production and revenue is lost due to complex wind plant interaction, said White.

White said the SWiFT facility allows for rapid, cost-efficient testing and development of transformative wind energy technology, with specific emphasis on improving wind plant performance. The facilitys advanced testing and monitoring will help researchers evaluate how larger wind farms can become more productive.

SWiFT will host both open-source and proprietary research as the result of a partnership among Sandia, Vestas, Texas Techs National Wind Institute at Reese Technology Center and Group NIRE, a renewable energy development company.

White said the three-year process to develop the facility has been rewarding and challenging.

It has been a phenomenal experience to work with a diverse team to complete the often under-appreciated process of turbine construction. We also had a 1980s-era, smaller turbine rebuilt to perform like a much larger machine, White said.

The project was a complete green-field construction so there was tremendous complexity in scheduling and managing all of the agreements and contracts to access to the facility, verify there wouldnt be an adverse environmental impact, procure the equipment, and contract numerous specialized labor resources. We succeeded primarily because we have a dedicated and competent team and a steadfast DOE customer, White said.

Researchers have begun planning the sites first research projects.

White said the two primary research projects for the next year will be testing and evaluating Sandias new National Rotor Testbed Project and collecting baseline data for turbine-turbine interaction that can be used by the international community to improve wind plant performance.

The National Rotor Testbed Project will provide a public, open-source complete rotor design that the wind energy community can work on collaboratively to bring the best technology to market as rapidly and cost-efficiently as possible, White said.

NYC Nikola Tesla Exhibit Opens Tomorrow, In Time For His 157th Birthday

NYC Nikola Tesla Exhibit Opens Tomorrow, In Time For His 157th Birthday

A new exhibit dedicated to the work of Nikola Tesla opens tomorrow at the New York Hall of Science in Queens. Called Tesla?s Wonderful World of Electricity, this homage to the late inventor was assembled with help from the Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade, Serbia. Why tomorrow? Because July 10th is Tesla's birthday, and is also deemed "Nikola Tesla Day" by the Nikola Tesla Memorial Society.

Sadly, I'm way over here in California, so I won't be able to check it out. But if you're in the New York area, it looks like it could be a fascinating exhibit. It includes photographs, models of some of Tesla's laboratories, and working models of some inventions.

The press release includes a description of the models that are included:

Among the items represented are induction motors with egg-shaped and disc-shaped rotors, a Tesla coil, Tesla?s pump with computer-animated working principles, a model of the Adams? power station on the Niagara River, a model of Tesla?s laboratory in Colorado Springs, and a model of Tesla?s airplane with vertical takeoff and landing capability.

The exhibit is open until October 20, 2013 and is free when you pay for admission to the museum, which will set you back $11 per adult and $8 per child, student or senior.

There's no word if Tesla's model for a perfect society?free of those deemed unfit to breed and overweight people?might be included. Presumably, you'll find out at the door.

Single Parents 7 Step Plan | Single Parent And Serving Him

You?re probably familiar with Stephen R. Covey?s popular self-help book titled The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People, and spin-offs such as Covey?s The 7 Habits of Highly Successful Families, and The 7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens. So as you can see everyone has a seven step plan to do???. ?But what about the seven habits of highly successful single parents? Developing the following practices will dramatically improve both your home and personal life:??

1. Create a Community of Support

Having a support system you can count on is absolutely vital, not just to ?surviving? single parenthood, but to maintaining your sense of self at the same time. I recommend that single moms and dads develop support in three key areas:

Local family and friends

Local single parents

Online single parents

Consider how you can develop a combination of local individuals you can count on to help you with practical issues, like driving the kids to and from activities, with online support you can reach out to as needed, 24/7.??

2. Schedule Time for Yourself

As a single parent, it is absolutely vital that you schedule down time in your life to rest, recuperate, and refuel. Begin by marking off just two ?dates? with yourself over the next four weeks. If necessary, schedule a babysitter, or swap child care duties with a friend. Then, when the time arrives, go out and do something you enjoy: go work out, go window-shopping, or see a movie.

In addition, try to give yourself one night a week to set aside work, chores, and obligations and do something for yourself after the kids have gone to bed: take a bath, read a book, or catch up with a friend over the phone. Building these small pockets of ?me time? into your life will help you maintain the stamina you need for raising your kids.??

3. Learn to Say No

There are a lot of things you need to say ?No? to in your life: Your kids? tendency to manipulate you into giving in, the guilt that?s been weighing you down since you embarked on this single parenting journey, the expectations of others who have no idea what it?s like to walk in your shoes. It?s not always easy to say no and set firm boundaries in your life, but it?s important to remember that being willing to say ?No,? when necessary, creates space in your life for the things you really want to say ?Yes? to.??

4. Play With Your Kids

One of the questions I often ask my coaching clients is ?What gives you energy?? Nine times out of ten, that answer includes some variation of ?My kids do.? Being in the presence of your children, playing with them, and giving them your attention doesn?t just meet their needs, it also satisfies your deep need for meaningful interaction and purpose. So the next time you come home exhausted and utterly spent, try setting everything aside for a few minutes and just enjoying your kids. You?ll quickly find that playing with and engaging your kids has the power to almost instantly sift your true priorities from those things that are non-essential.

Lakeshore Drive between Pratt Drive and the University of New Orleans campus to be closed Monday

lakeshore drive closing.jpg

A segment of Lakeshore Drive between Pratt Drive and the University of New Orleans campus, marked in red, will be closed Monday for pre-construction work for the permanent canal closure and pump station project at the Lake Pontchartrain entrance of the London Avenue Canal. The road is expected to reopen by 5 p.m. (Army Corps of Engineers)

A section of Lakeshore Drive between Pratt Drive and the entrance to the University of New Orleans will be temporarily closed, beginning Monday, to accommodate preparation for the construction of the permanent canal closure and pump station at the London Avenue outfall canal, the Army Corps of Engineers announced late Sunday.

The temporary closure was originally scheduled for Friday, but was postponed because of poor weather.

Weather permitting, the temporary closure will begin at 7 a.m. to allow workers to position cranes, barges and other equipment in the canal. Lakeshore Drive will be reopened to traffic at 5 p.m.

The permanent canal closure and pump stations at the Lake Pontchartrain entrances of the 17th Street, Orleans Avenue and London Avenue canals are designed to reduce the risk of storm surges entering the canals that are caused by hurricanes that have a 1 percent chance of occurring in any year, a so-called 100-year storm.

Pre-construction activities include surveying, soil sampling and test pile driving are either under way or will begin at all three canals in the next few weeks. Major construction activities will begin in the fall.

The existing temporary gates and pumps at the ends of the canals will continue to provide protection from surges caused by 100-year storms until the permanent closure structures are complete. Corps officials say the temporary structures have performed as designed in five named tropical weather events, including Hurricanes Gustav and Isaac, since they were completed in 2006.

Residents and commuters were urged to use caution near the three active construction areas. The corps has established a toll free Construction Hotline at 877.427.0345, and the public also can get regular updates by clicking "like" at the agency's Facebook page.

Egypt's emerging leaders after Morsi's overthrow

CAIRO (AP) ? Contours are emerging of Egypt's new leadership, with a chief rival of deposed Islamist President Mohammed Morsi appointed as interim prime minister on Saturday.

Here is a look at the top three figures today in Egypt.

?INTERIM PRESIDENT: Adly Mansour, 67, a judge.

Mansour emerged from near-obscurity when he became head of the Supreme Constitutional Court, two days before Egypt's military chief announced Wednesday that Morsi had been deposed and was to be replaced by the chief justice.

Mansour's career in the judiciary took a prominent turn in 1984, when he became a judge on the state council and then its vice president. In 1992, he was appointed vice president to the Supreme Constitutional Court. He became chief justice following his predecessor's retirement on June 30.

He was sworn in as Egypt's president on Thursday.

?INTERIM PRIME MINISTER: Mohammed ElBaradei, 71, a former director of the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

With a long career on the international scene, ElBaradei first served as an Egyptian diplomat to the United Nations and later as an aide to Egypt's foreign minister. He was the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency for nearly 12 years. He and the IAEA shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005.

After popular protests toppled longtime Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak in February 2011, ElBaradei emerged as a prominent democracy advocate and later as an opposition leader in the National Salvation Front. After a series of widely criticized moves by Morsi, ElBaradei said members of the dominant Muslim Brotherhood lived "in a delusion" for thinking they could manage the country on their own.

Mansour appointed ElBaradei as interim prime minister on Saturday.

?ARMY CHIEF: Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, 58, also the defense minister.

El-Sissi stepped onto the center stage of Egyptian politics when the military on Monday gave Morsi a 48-hour ultimatum to resolve his differences with the opposition after millions took to the streets on June 30 to demand the Islamist leader leave power. On Wednesday, el-Sissi announced Morsi's removal.

A graduate of the Egyptian military academy and the U.S. Army War College, el-Sissi was appointed commander in chief of the Egyptian armed forces in August 2012, replacing Field Marshall Mohammed Hussein Tantawi who was ordered into retirement by Morsi.

Slim pickings after busy start to NHL free agency

Jaromir Jagr is still available. So is goalie Tim Thomas, who continues exploring whether to make a comeback after taking a season off.

Mikhail Grabovski, anyone?

Otherwise, many of the available impact players were swept up in the first few hours after the NHL's free-agency opened Friday.

A total of 60 players were signed in deals involving 26 of the league's 30 teams, according to a list posted on NHL.com. They included Columbus landing Nathan Horton to a $37.1 million, seven-year contract and Daniel Alfredsson leaving Ottawa for a one-year deal in Detroit. Toronto signed David Clarkson to a $36.75 million, seven-year deal, while Jarome Iginla signed a one-year deal with Boston, the team he jilted for Pittsburgh earlier this season.

And then another nine were traded, with the biggest move involving the Senators filling the void Alfredsson left by acquiring Anaheim forward Bobby Ryan in exchange for two forwards and a first-round draft pick.

At the rate players were being signed and swapped, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren was relieved to have addressed most of his team's needs before the market officially opened.

"I didn't think the defense market was as strong as centers. The better ones went right away," Holmgren said, while formally announcing the team had signed captain Claude Giroux to an eight-year extension worth over $64 million. "I think we were fortunate to jump in on Mark when we did."

Holmgren was referring to defenseman Mark Streit, who was acquired in a trade with the New York Islanders before Philadelphia locked him up to a four-year, $21 million contract last week. Holmgren also could have mentioned Philadelphia getting Vincent Lecavalier ? this summer's most prized free agent ? to agree to a five-year deal on Tuesday.

That didn't stop Holmgren from signing goalies Ray Emery and Yann Danis on Friday to shore up what remains an unsettled position.

Beyond that, it's a wonder anyone's still available.

Former Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov's still on the market. So are two ex-Detroit teammates, Damien Brunner and Daniel Cleary. As for defense, there's Toni Lydman.

And then there's Teemu Selanne, who usually takes his time in free agency. Ducks general manager Bob Murray is scheduled to contact Selanne next week to see whether the Finn is close to making a decision on returning for one more year.

Many players came to much quicker decisions.

Alfredsson was driven to the Motor City by the opportunity to win a championship, and was joined, soon after, by center Stephen Weiss, who agreed to a five-year, $24.5 million contract.

"It's all about trying to get the Stanley Cup," Alfredsson said.

For others, it was the lure of finding the right fit.

Horton was willing to give up big-city living in Boston, for the chance to raise his family in a more collegiate environment such as Columbus.

"It's a great opportunity for me and my family to be in a house and for it to be a little more quiet," Horton said, while noting he is also eager to help transform the Blue Jackets into contenders. "I want to be in the playoffs and everybody else does (here), and we've got the team to do it. That's why I'm so excited."

The Toronto Maple Leafs, coming off their first postseason appearance since 2004, also made a statement by signing Clarkson and keeping first-line center Tyler Bozak with a $21 million, five-year deal.

Tampa Bay reached a $25 million, five-year deal with 29-year-old center Valtteri Filppula to essentially replace Lecavalier.

Ottawa wasn't expecting Alfredsson to bolt.

"It was a devastating conversation, a disappointing one, hard to swallow," Senators general manager Bryan Murray acknowledged. "But I understand a veteran player that hasn't won and wants to win and sees a better opportunity."

The Senators, though, got younger and perhaps better up front by acquiring Ryan. Ottawa sent forwards Jakob Silfverbeg, Stefan Noesen and its first-round pick in next year's draft to the Ducks for the four-time 30-goal scorer.

A lot of other teams also made moves to jockey for position in the parity-filled league:

?The Phoenix Coyotes, with a new owner, signed forward Mike Ribeiro to a four-year, $22 million contract.

?The New Jersey Devils signed forward Ryane Clowe to a five-year, $24.25 million contract, and forward Michael Ryder to a two-year, $7 million deal.

?The Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks re-signed defenseman Michal Rozsival, forward Michal Handzus and gave 40-year goalie Nikolai Khabibulin a one-year deal to replace Emery.

?The Pittsburgh Penguins reunited with defenseman Rob Scuderi by giving him a four-year $13.5 million deal.

?The New York Islanders re-signed goalie Evgeni Nabokov to a one-year, $3.25 million deal and defenseman Travis Hamonic to a seven-year, $27 million contract, and signed free-agent forward Pierre-Marc Bouchard to a one-year, $2 million contract.

Israel relying on Egyptian army to counter Islamists

JERUSALEM (AFP) -- Israel is relying on the Egyptian army to suppress Islamist militants in the Sinai and to ensure the country's stability after the dismissal of Mohamed Mursi as president, media and politicians said.

The Egyptian military overthrew Mursi on Wednesday after millions of protesters rallied to demand the Islamist leader quit for failing the 2011 revolution and bolstering his Islamist base at the expense of the rest of the country.

Ministers in the Israeli cabinet have so far stuck to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's order for silence on the subject.

But MP Tzahi Hanegbi, who is close to Netanyahu, welcomed the ouster of Mursi, Egypt's first democratically elected president who hails from the Muslim Brotherhood.

"Israel's clear interest is for Egypt to remain stable, favorable to the West and the US, and that it does not let itself get carried away by a wave of religious extremism," said Hanegbi, former head of the Knesset (parliament) commission on defense and foreign affairs.

"Over Mursi's year in power, we noticed worrying developments, and that is why the return to prominence of the army and a secular authority capable of ensuring the stability of the country is good news for Israel," he added.

Israel's former ambassador to Egypt, Yitzhak Levanon, also stressed the positive role of the army in Egypt.

"The Egyptian authorities are aware of Israel sensitivity to everything that happens in the Sinai, and now the Egyptian army feels a little freer to act firmly against Islamist elements," he explained.

The daily Yedioth Aharonoth said that the "security cooperation" between the two countries has been beefed up in recent days.

The newspaper reported that just several hours after Mursi's dismissal, an "official Israeli representative secretly arrived in Cairo to meet with Egyptian security and intelligence officials," without giving any further details.

"Security links were good during the Mursi period, and should be even better from now on," Yedioth wrote.

A hive of militant activity, Egypt's Sinai peninsula is a major route for drugs smuggling and human trafficking.

Ever since the uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak in 2011, throwing his feared security services into disarray, the region has grown even more restless and awash with weapons.

Attacks and kidnappings targeting Egyptian security forces in the area have multiplied, and militants have fired rockets from the region at Israel.

On Friday, militants launched coordinated rocket and machine gun attacks on Egyptian army and police checkpoints in the Sinai, killing one soldier and wounding two others, Egyptian medical sources said.

A police station and a military intelligence building in the border town of Rafah also came under fire from rockets, security sources said.

Several Islamist militants have publicly threatened to carry out raids in reprisal for Mursi's dismissal on Wednesday.

The Israeli army said Tuesday that it had "authorized" the deployment of Egyptian military reinforcements in the Sinai.

"The Egyptian military activity in the Sinai is coordinated with Israeli security elements and authorized at the most senior levels in Israel, in order to contend with security threats in the Sinai that pose a threat to both Israel and Egypt," the army said in a statement.

The 1979 peace treaty between the two countries has imposed strict controls on deployments.

Oded Granot, a commentator for public television, also stressed that the Egyptian army "has every chance of staying at the center of the political spectrum".

He noted that "it will be a long time before an Egyptian leader can imitate (Turkey's Islamist Prime Minister) Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who managed to bring the Turkish army into line".

Another analyst, Udi Segal, said that an Egyptian army "in a strong position" should continue to pursue a policy hostile to the Hamas rulers of the Gaza Strip by blocking the many tunnels between Gaza and Egypt "to prevent Palestinian Islamist militants from infiltrating Egypt".
