All Blacks Security Contractor Owes Nearly $1m | Stuff.co.nz

The All Blacks' bodyguard has been liquidated.

Companies owned by a Christchurch security consultant who provides security for Dan Carter, Richie McCaw and their team-mates and Christchurch events have folded owing nearly a million dollars to Inland Revenue.

Ryan Security and Consulting (Christchurch) Ltd and Ryan Security and Consulting (Auckland) Ltd were placed in liquidation in April by the High Court in Christchurch on a request from Inland Revenue.

The companies allegedly owe GST and PAYE tax, including penalties, of $969,000.

The companies' sole director, Jayson Ryan, who has been a security consultant for the All Blacks, New Zealand Cricket and the Government, has provided security for Christchurch events and has been active in security issues in the central city.

Ryan told liquidators Malcolm Hollis and Maurice Noone, of PricewaterhouseCoopers, the companies got into strife because of a large bad debt, a decline in events due to the Christchurch earthquakes and a period during which he was ill.

The liquidators, in their first report, said the companies were owed large amounts by other companies in the Ryan group.

They had written to Ryan asking him to repay the inter-company debts.

Large amounts of "administration costs" were also paid to Ryan Security Holdings Ltd (also owned and directed by Ryan) in the year before the liquidations and Ryan had been asked to repay the amounts, as the liquidators believed the transactions were voidable.

"We have been advised by the director the companies never had written contracts [with clients]

and therefore the director is continuing to operate one or more security businesses."

The liquidators said they had asked Ryan to either purchase the failed companies' chattels from the liquidators or make the assets available to sell.

The company's website says Ryan Security and Consulting was formed in 2005 by Ryan after more than 15 years "in senior national security roles".

"Jayson is recognised both nationally and internationally as a leader in the security industry and his security consultancy services are utilised by a number of high profile organisations throughout the country, including the All Blacks, The Edge Management Group overseeing the Aotea Centre, Auckland Town Hall and the Civic and Aotea Square, the New Zealand Government and a number of high profile private businesses."

A previous company of which Ryan was owner and director, Ryan Security and Consulting Ltd, was put into liquidation in December 2008, owing IRD both GST and PAYE of about $225,000, according to Companies Office records.

Ryan declined to answer questions from Fairfax Media and instead issued a short statement saying:

"I can confirm that my accountant and lawyer are currently reviewing communications received from the liquidators and they are preparing a response.

"On that basis I do not believe it is appropriate for me to comment any further at this stage."
